Ozone: A Scenario-based Activity in Kinetics Info

Go to Activity

Description

Students use kinetics to interpret raw experimental data to determine the mechanism of ozone destruction. In this pen and pencil activity, students are given data obtained from laboratory experiments to study the ozone depletion reaction: O3 (g) + O(g) → 2O2(g). Students use this data to determine the phenomenology of ozone depletion kinetics, both for the uncatalyzed reaction and for the chlorine catalyzed reaction. They then develop chemical mechanisms to explain the phenomenological results.
